Crop Background and Variety Selection
Select cabbage or broccoli varieties for fresh, processing, shipping and planting season, prioritizing heat tolerance, maturity, head firmness and resistance to black rot, clubroot and local problems. Broccoli is sensitive to heat and transplant stress, so plan head formation for the most suitable temperature period.
Soil Preparation and Planting
Use fertile, well-drained fields at suitable pH; clubroot-risk land requires special attention to pH, rotation and drainage. Transplant sturdy disease-free plants in cool or moderate conditions. Raised beds and mulch improve drainage, moisture and weeds; do not set transplants too deep.
Nutrient Management
Supply N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg and B from testing, splitting N into smaller doses and maintaining K and B during cabbage heading or broccoli crown formation. Boron Balance fits confirmed B deficiency and Humic acid supports the root zone; excessive N makes soft tissue and increases disease risk.
Irrigation Recommendations
Maintain consistent soil moisture because water stress produces loose cabbage heads and small or bitter broccoli crowns. Prefer drip or morning irrigation and increase frequency on sand; drain promptly in wet weather and avoid long leaf wetness.
Pest and Disease Management
Scout for diamondback moth, imported cabbageworm, cabbage looper, aphids, flea beetles, root maggot, black rot, downy mildew and clubroot. Screens, clean transplants, rotation, sanitation, traps and natural enemies are key; use locally registered Bt early on small larvae and follow resistance and preharvest rules.
Harvest and Post-Harvest Handling
Harvest cabbage once heads are firm and market size is reached. Harvest broccoli promptly while buds are tight and unopened, leaving a short stem. Shade, precool and hold at high humidity; remove insect-damaged, yellow, loose or split heads.
