Crop Background and Variety Selection
Select slicing, pickling, mini or protected long-fruit types by market. Prioritize resistance to downy mildew, powdery mildew and viruses outdoors; parthenocarpic types suit protected production. Remove row covers at flowering from cultivars that require insect pollination.
Soil Preparation and Planting
Use moisture-retentive, well-drained soil near pH 6.0-6.5 with adequate organic matter. Plant after frost when soil reaches about 21°C. Sow about 1.3 cm deep and thin to 20-30 cm. Raised beds, mulch and trellises improve drainage, airflow and fruit cleanliness.
Nutrient Management
Base fertilizer on tests. Use a balanced NPK fertilizer to establish vines, then split potassium while maintaining calcium and magnesium after flowering. Excess N drives foliage instead of fruit. Humic acid root-zone conditioning supports roots, while seaweed extract supports establishment and heat recovery; apply EDTA micronutrients only after diagnosis.
Irrigation Recommendations
Maintain even moisture, commonly near 25 mm weekly after climate and soil adjustments. Never allow stress during flowering, set or repeated harvest. Use drip or soaker irrigation in the morning and keep foliage dry; irrigate sandy soil more frequently with smaller doses.
Pest and Disease Management
Check leaf undersides weekly for aphids, whiteflies, thrips and mites; remove heavily affected leaves and conserve beneficials. At low pressure use registered neem, oils or entomopathogenic fungi. Rotation, resistant varieties, drip irrigation and airflow are central to managing mildews, angular leaf spot, wilt and viruses.
Harvest and Post-Harvest Handling
Pick at the market length while skin is green and seeds remain soft. During peak production, harvest daily or every second day and remove oversized yellow fruit. Handle gently, cool quickly and store short term near 10-13°C at high humidity to avoid chilling injury.
