Crop Background and Variety Selection

Select fruit size, shape, flesh color, soluble solids and shipping ability for the market. Seeded and seedless systems differ: seedless watermelon needs a suitable proportion of pollinizer plants and active pollinating insects during bloom; do not plant an entire field to seedless types only.

Soil Preparation and Planting

Use full sun and well-drained sandy loam or loam, commonly near pH 6.0-6.5. Avoid cucurbit-disease fields for several years. Plant or transplant only after soil is reliably warm, with mulch, drip and spacing sized for the variety and system to reduce cold and wind injury.

Nutrient Management

Apply base nutrients from testing and split N and K through fertigation: keep nutrition balanced through establishment and vine growth, then increase K and monitor Ca, Mg and B after bloom and set. Calcium Amino Suspension and Boron Balance fit test-guided flower and fruit programs; excess N reduces quality and delays maturity.

Irrigation Recommendations

Maintain stable water at flowering, pollination, set and fruit sizing, avoiding both drought and flood irrigation. Prefer morning drip; moderate late irrigation only without inducing wilt. Drain quickly in rain to limit cracking and root disease.

Pest and Disease Management

Scout for aphids, thrips, mites, cucumber beetles, whiteflies, Fusarium wilt, anthracnose, downy mildew and gummy stem blight. Clean seed, rotation, drainage, sanitation, sticky cards and natural enemies form the base; use registered Bt, neem or entomopathogenic fungi early where appropriate.

Harvest and Post-Harvest Handling

Determine maturity by cultivar, days after pollination, tendril change, ground-spot color, firmness and soluble solids together. Handle gently, shade and grade fruit, avoid sun exposure and chilling, and do not pack damaged or diseased melons with sound fruit.
