Crop Background and Variety Selection
Select hardneck or softneck garlic for winter chill, planting season, market and storage goal. Plant only firm, full, disease-free cloves; do not use unknown food-market bulbs as seed when they may carry disease or be poorly adapted.
Soil Preparation and Planting
Use loose soil that retains moisture but drains well, commonly near pH 6.0-7.0. Test fertility, salts and disease history, and avoid recent allium rotations. Plant in the locally suitable fall window or early spring after workable soil and chilling requirements, with clove tips up.
Nutrient Management
Garlic needs nitrogen early, but large late N inputs can delay bulb development. Supply P, K, S, Ca, Mg, B and Zn from tests in small split applications to avoid salt injury. Humic acid fits the root zone; seaweed and amino acids fit transplant, cold or heat-drought recovery.
Irrigation Recommendations
Keep the root zone evenly moist, increasing frequency on sandy soil and avoiding prolonged waterlogging. Do not allow drought during bulb expansion; gradually stop irrigation about two weeks before harvest when weather and soil allow to reduce wrapper staining and storage disease.
Pest and Disease Management
Monitor onion thrips, onion maggot, mites, rust, downy mildew, white rot and soft rot. Clean planting stock, four-year or longer rotation, drainage, sanitation and early scouting are central; locally registered Bt, fungal or botanical tools can fit low-pressure IPM.
Harvest and Post-Harvest Handling
Harvest when lower leaves brown while enough upper leaves remain green and bulbs are filled. Lift gently, cure plants with tops attached for about three to four weeks in a warm, dry, airy place, then trim, grade and store dry with ventilation.
