Crop Background and Variety Selection

Select short-day, day-neutral or everbearing types for latitude, season, protected or open-field system and market. Use certified clean transplants and prioritize adaptation to local Phytophthora, wilt, powdery mildew and pest pressure; never move untested runners from diseased blocks.

Soil Preparation and Planting

Use aerated, well-drained soil or substrate, commonly near pH 5.5-6.5. Assess nematode, Phytophthora and salinity risk before replanting. Raised beds, drip and mulch are preferred; set crowns at soil level, neither buried nor left with exposed roots.

Nutrient Management

Use low-concentration, high-frequency fertigation: build roots and canopy early, then raise K and maintain Ca, Mg and B through flowering and fruiting. Humic acid supports root-zone conditioning; Calcium Amino Suspension and Boron Balance fit test-guided use. Avoid high EC and excessive N.

Irrigation Recommendations

Strawberry roots are shallow and sensitive to wet-dry swings. Apply small morning drip irrigations based on soil or substrate moisture, evapotranspiration and crop load. Keep foliage and crowns dry, drain fast in rain and investigate water quality, drainage and roots when EC rises.

Pest and Disease Management

Scout for Botrytis, powdery mildew, Phytophthora, anthracnose, aphids, thrips, mites, whiteflies and slugs. Clean plants, raised beds, ventilation, diseased-fruit removal, sticky cards, predatory mites and locally registered Bt, Bacillus or entomopathogenic fungi fit IPM.

Harvest and Post-Harvest Handling

Pick frequently when berries are fully colored but firm, avoiding hot or rain-wet harvest. Gentle handling, rapid precooling, grading and an unbroken cold chain protect quality; discard soft, diseased and compressed fruit and do not hold washed berries wet.
