Crop Background and Variety Selection
Select cultivar and rootstock for market, climate, flowering type, vigor and key diseases. Avocado is sensitive to frost, waterlogging and salts, so plant healthy nursery trees with low Phytophthora risk; plan pollinizer blocks around local bloom overlap and pollinator activity.
Soil Preparation and Planting
Use deep, exceptionally well-drained soil and avoid hardpans or low, wet ground. Test pH, EC, Na, chloride, boron, organic matter and nutrients before establishment; use berms on heavy or Phytophthora-risk soils and coarse organic mulch under canopies, kept away from trunks.
Nutrient Management
Split N and K from leaf analysis and avoid one high-salt fertilizer dose. Monitor Ca, Mg, B, Zn and Fe; boron requires caution and iron chlorosis requires diagnosis. Humic acid supports root-zone organic-matter management, while Calcium Amino Suspension around flowering and fruit growth still requires steady moisture and active roots.
Irrigation Recommendations
Schedule drip or micro-sprinklers by evapotranspiration, tree age, soil moisture and water quality. Zone young and mature trees separately and never irrigate them at one frequency. Avocado is sensitive to Na, chloride and high EC; poor drainage is not corrected by applying more water.
Pest and Disease Management
Phytophthora root rot is a central risk: rely on clean nursery trees, drainage, root health, mulch, tool sanitation and monitoring. Also scout thrips, mites, scales, fruit flies and local diseases; conserve natural enemies and use locally registered biological or conventional tools when needed.
Harvest and Post-Harvest Handling
Harvest by local dry-matter, oil-content or maturity standards, not rind color alone. Clip with a short stem, prevent drop and bruising, then grade and cool promptly while controlling transport temperature to avoid over-ripening, chilling injury and mechanical damage.
