Crop Background and Variety Selection
Select winter or spring wheat by local planting window, end use and disease pressure. Milling wheat needs yield, protein and test weight; in wet or Fusarium-risk areas, use tolerant material and avoid unsuitable flowering windows.
Soil Preparation and Planting
Choose well-drained fields with low carryover disease risk. Test pH, organic matter, N, P, K, S, Zn and salinity; use healthy seed at suitable depth for uniform establishment and avoid late, deep planting or continuous wheat.
Nutrient Management
Base phosphorus and potassium on soil tests. Split nitrogen by stand, variety, soil N supply and protein target, with close attention from tillering through stem elongation and boot. Humic acid supports the root zone; seaweed and amino acids fit cold, drought or phytotoxicity recovery. Do not chase protein late with excessive N that increases lodging and disease.
Irrigation Recommendations
Prevent prolonged water stress at tillering, stem elongation, heading-flowering and grain fill. In rainfed fields conserve soil water; where irrigation is used, apply by soil moisture and avoid standing water, lodging and prolonged high humidity at flowering.
Pest and Disease Management
Scout for stripe and leaf rust, powdery mildew, Fusarium head blight, root rots, aphids and head pests. Resistant varieties, seed treatment, rotation, residue management and flowering weather alerts are the base; use only locally registered products when risk warrants.
Harvest and Post-Harvest Handling
Harvest promptly once grain is mature and weather permits to limit sprouting, lodging and mold. Clean, cool and dry grain to locally safe storage moisture, keeping protein, disease-risk and quality lots separate.
