Crop Background and Variety Selection

Select long, round, oval or mini types by market. Favor locally adapted heat tolerance and resistance to bacterial wilt, Verticillium, viruses and root-knot nematodes, or use resistant grafted plants. Heat, drought and unsuitable night temperatures reduce fruit set.

Soil Preparation and Planting

Use fertile, sunny, well-drained soil near pH 5.5-7.5, avoid recent solanaceous fields and incorporate mature compost. Raise transplants for about 8-10 weeks; plant after nights stay above 10°C at roughly 45 cm within rows and 75-90 cm between rows, then mulch and support.

Nutrient Management

Supply P, K, Ca and Mg from tests. Use a balanced NPK fertilizer early, then split more potassium and use options such as Calcium Amino Suspension after flowering; excess N creates leaves instead of fruit. Humic acid root-zone conditioning supports weak or replanted roots, while amino acids and seaweed aid establishment and heat recovery.

Irrigation Recommendations

Maintain uniform root-zone moisture, commonly near 25 mm weekly after evapotranspiration adjustment. Avoid wet-dry cycles during flowering and fruit expansion. Prefer morning drip irrigation and mulch; avoid flooding and prolonged leaf wetness.

Pest and Disease Management

Scout flea beetles, aphids, mites, thrips and cutworms; protect seedlings from flea beetles and use registered neem, entomopathogenic fungi or Bt at low pressure. Rotation, resistant rootstocks, sanitation and drainage reduce wilts, root rots, viruses and nematodes.

Harvest and Post-Harvest Handling

Cut fruit with a short stem when it reaches market size, remains glossy and has soft seeds; dull skin indicates overmaturity. Pick frequently, prevent abrasion, shade and grade quickly, and store briefly near 10-12°C at high humidity.
